Searching for God’s strength!

One of the attributes or characteristics of God is His strength.  There is no way to measure or describe God’s strength because it is infinite, just as He is infinite.  Our finite minds will never fully grasp that concept.  Humans, by nature, seem to have an insatiable desire to measure the world around them.  We seem to never tire of exploring and finding those things that have not yet been found.  Today’s verse tells us that this characteristic was placed in us by God.

In our verse for the day we are exhorted to search for God and for His strength.  We need to be careful not to miss the implication that this carries for all of us.  This means that our relationship with God must be an active one.  We can’t be passive and find God or His strength; just as you can’t be passive and discover something that has never been discovered before.

One of the obvious places to do this is in God’s Word.  God reveals Himself through His word and His strength is acquired as we take hold of His promises.  As we learn about God in His word, more and more of His strength is revealed to us.  Another area where God is found, and His strength appropriated is in prayer.  As we pray, God reveals Himself to us and the Holy Spirit strengthens us.

To find God and His strength also means that we need to go places that we have not been before if we want to discover the unknown things of God.  That can be a very thing for some people; especially in times of trial or tribulation but it is exactly in those places where God and His strength are most profoundly manifested.  Too often we will run away or avoid the very things that we need in order to discover the secret things of God and His strength.

The thing that struck me about this verse are the last words: ‘and keep on searching’.  This search is not a one-time thing; it is not even a seasonal thing, it is a life-long journey.  The Bible teaches that all wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ Jesus.  Our lives should be marked by a growing passion to know Jesus and to discover all the hidden things that we can find in Him.  As we do this we will find ourselves growing in strength.

Jesus was the ultimate example of the strength of God being revealed in a living person.  As we search for God and His strength we will find ourselves growing daily to be more like Jesus and we will experience His strength flowing through us into the lives of others.  It requires faithfulness and diligence to daily search for God and His strength.  Even that cannot be found outside of God and the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.  Daily, ask God to give you the passion to continue searching for all that He has for you.  Jesus, create within us a burning desire to discover all there is to know about You.
